The vast territory encompassed by the People's Republic of China is home to nearly a quarter of the world's population. It is an amazing statistic but one that is easy to believe when you are travelling through the crowded streets of Beijing or Shanghai.

China has many land borders. To the southeast, Vietnam, Laos, Burma and India all have relatively short boundaries with Chinese territory. As you progress west, the tiny territory of Bhutan and the mountain state of Nepal border with China's own autonomous state of Tibet. Afghanistan, Tajikstan, Kyrgzstan, massive Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia surround China's western and northern extremes. North and South Korea occupy a peninsula on the Northeast Coast.
